Brenna Davidson and Jeffry Oktavianus, doctoral students from COM, won the third-place student paper award from the Electronic News Division at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), which was held virtually on August 6-9, 2020. Their paper, entitled “What to watch? Text-image relationship strategies and their use on framing the 2019 Hong Kong protests on YouTube”, examines video thumbnails and titles on YouTube to understand online meaning construction through the framing and text-image relationship strategies employed by the video creators during the 2019 Hong Kong protest. The analysis of 498 video titles and their corresponding thumbnails suggests that the contents were predominantly from media outlets and utilized frames emphasizing protest violence. The frame was also reinforced through the illustration strategy on the video title and thumbnail.
