PROGRAMME AIMS

  • The programme aims to produce management personnel with a customer-oriented mentality, interpersonal skills, organizing ability as well as management competence to work in a range of private, government and non-government organizations.


CAREER PROSPECTS AND FURTHER STUDY

Graduates of the programme can apply for admission to:

  • Various degree programmes in social science offered by CityU and other local universities with credit transfer or advanced standing;
  • Degree programmes offered by selected universities in the UK and Australia with advanced standing;
  • The final year of BA (Hons) Travel and Tourism Management offered by Northumbria University (UK) through City University of Hong Kong
  • A 12-month top-up degree programme leading to BA (Hons) in Applied Social Sciences offered by Sheffield Hallam University through City University of Hong Kong

Graduates of the programme will find employment in a wide variety of sectors such as the government, community services organizations, education, public utilities and non-government organizations. Previous graduates have been employed in the public sector as Liaison Officers, Housing Officers and Leisure and Cultural Services Managers and in the voluntary and private sectors as Customer Services Officers, Property Officers, Clubhouse Managers and Project Coordinators.


MAIN SUBJECT AREAS

  • This programme comprises two stages. Students in the first year take courses in social science disciplines, communication and interpersonal skills, and management and organizing skills. In year two, students choose one of the two concentrations to acquire specialized knowledge and skills.*
  • Leisure and cultural services*
    Students will develop a solid foundation in the area of leisure, arts and culture. They will also learn the theories and skills of managing leisure and cultural services and organizing activities and events. Students will acquire the competence which enables them to work for recreation, sports and arts organizations.
  • Housing management*
    Students will develop an understanding of how services can be managed to meet the needs of residents in housing estates. They will learn how service quality and green management can be achieved in housing management. Students will be well equipped to work at junior management level in housing estates and clubhouses.

 

* Depending on the number of students enrolled to the programme, the Division may decide to offer both or either of the concentrations in any particular year.


SPECIAL FEATURES

  • A special feature of the programme is the Industrial Attachment. Students can choose to work in a community based organization for an extended period, often in the summer semester between year 1 and year 2, in order to gain some real life experience with support from the teaching staff and supervisors from the community organization. Such opportunities not only enhance classroom learning but also often result in ongoing part-time employment and beneficial professional contacts.
