PROGRAMME AIMS
Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate three forms of awareness, namely, civic and social awareness, cultural and historical awareness, and economic and technological awareness, and explain their relationships with real world issues;
- Apply the main perspectives, orientation and methods in the discipline of social sciences in a wide variety of professional contexts;
- Apply critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed lifelong learning skills in their personal and professional work settings;
- Identify their interest and ability in a specific field in the discipline of applied social studies;
- Relate knowledge of the core concepts, principles, methods and the essential competence to practice areas in the field they have selected.
FURTHER STUDIES AND CAREER PROSPECTS
- Articulation routes to local and overseas universities are provided to graduates who wish to obtain a first degree, such as the Bachelor of Social Science programmes in City University of Hong Kong and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Applied Communication in Royal Roads University, Canada. - Graduates will find employment in fields like human services, administration, management, education and training, consultancy, and research and development.
MAIN SUBJECT AREAS

This programme comprises two stages. The first stage courses provide students with a solid foundation of social sciences. In the second stage, students may choose to concentrate on one of the following disciplines: Guidance and Counselling, International Studies and Urban Studies, which will enable them to acquire specialized knowledge and skills for further academic and career development.
- Guidance and Counselling develops students’ abilities to help others solve their problems. It also lays a solid foundation for students to pursue further study in this area.
- International Studies enables students to understand the dynamics of international bodies and organizations so as to develop a globalized worldview.
- Urban Studies broadens students’ understanding of the socio-economic development of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta and develops their macro-planning skills.
