Division of Social Studies

The Division of Social Studies aspires to produce graduates who possess broad-based knowledge in the domains of social science, communication skills, analytic and problem-solving abilities, global vision, cultural sensitivity and competence for lifelong learning on top of the discipline-specific attitude, knowledge and skills pertinent to their respective programme of studies. It places dual emphasis on formal curriculum and out-of-classroom activities, and adopts a teaching and learning approach that is student-directed and integrates knowing, thinking, feeling and acting.

The Division has 42 full-time faculty members, all holding at least one Master’s degree. Over 50% are either doctoral degree holders or PhD candidates.

More than half of our 2007 graduates were admitted to local and overseas degree programmes, of whom 30% have enrolled in UGC-funded degree programmes. The rest took up employment in a wide variety of sectors at frontline management or associate professional level, such as social work and social care, leisure and tourism, community and social services in public organizations, non-profit-making organizations and private companies.

The Division has received a number of awards in recognition of its outstanding performance. These include the City University Reward on Maximizing Students’ Learning, the International Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology awarded in the U.S.A., and the CityU’s Teaching Excellence Award won by three of our faculty members.
