CCCU succeeds in Land Grant Scheme Application

The Community College of City University (CCCU) has succeeded in its recent application for a land grant under the Government’s Land Grant Scheme (LGS). In the latest land grant of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, CCCU has been granted the Tai Wai Station Development located at the Tai Wai Railway Station.

“We are grateful for the Government’s support of CCCU. Self-financing sub-degree higher education has been receiving increasing support from the HKSAR Government in recent years in the provision of more senior year places and greater workplace recognition. This land grant is further proof of such support, now that self-financing sub-degree education is firmly established as a feature of Hong Kong’s higher education scene,” said Mr Vincent Chow Wing-shing, JP, Vice Chair of the CCCU Board of Management.

The site comprises a floor area of about 15,000 m2 on three floors of the Tai Wai Station Development, and can house about 1,700 students. The property is expected to be ready for handover in 2020, where following fitting out it will become the flagship campus of CCCU as it exits the Kowloon Tong campus of City University of Hong Kong.

“The Tai Wai site will be used to accommodate some of our key Associate Degree programmes and become the centre for our student services. By enabling the development of our own secure campus, this grant will greatly help CCCU in its path towards full independence from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU),” said Ms Jennifer Ng Glok-hong, Principal of CCCU. “From the 1980s, when all our sub-degree programmes were publicly-funded, CCCU has always been one of the most experienced providers of sub-degree education to the Hong Kong community. The accreditation of all our programmes with the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) earlier this year further reinforces our position as a quality provider of self-financing sub-degree programmes in Hong Kong,” Ms Ng added.

“With CCCU coming under the stewardship of the University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia, since July last year, this has further strengthened our position in Hong Kong as we become an integral part of UOW’s global network of campuses including Australia and Dubai. This global network puts us in a unique position of strength among sub-degree providers in Hong Kong,” Ms Ng added.

CCCU has played its part in the internationalization of education in Hong Kong by using its own funds to support students to go on study tours to learn about foreign cultures, recruiting staff with an international profile, and recently entering into a collaborative relationship with a Mainland university to deliver its associate degree programme in Beijing. Here in Hong Kong, CCCU has worked with UOW to bring more of its undergraduate programmes to the city.

Through the provision of high quality student facilities and services, the Tai Wai campus will bring about a total learning experience for CCCU students, enabling the College to maintain the high academic standards of all programmes. “The Tai Wai site matches well with CCCU’s student population in the New Territories and Kowloon districts, who make up 83% of its entire student population (51% reside in the New Territories and 32% in Kowloon). With this great teaching venue, we look forward to continue our role as a leading provider of quality sub-degree education to Hong Kong and the region,” said Ms Ng.
