• Approved and governed by the State Language Commission, Ministry of Education.
• Since 2000 this has become the statutory test of Putonghua competence by its inclusion in PRC Laws.
• Recognized as the standard test for Putonghua Proficiency. Attainment of Grade A or B in Level 2 is required to qualify as an instructor in Chinese or a civil servant in Mainland respectively.

Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

• Internationally recognized to assess the proficiency in Japanese. The test is labeled from Level 1 (the highest level) to Level 4 (It will be revised to 5 different levels in 2010).

• Held in 159 cities in 51 countries/regions and taken by over 500,000 people worldwide. In 2007 alone, some 13,000 people took the JLPT in Hong Kong.

• Consists of “Vocabulary”, “Listening”, and “Reading and Grammar” sections (A new test format will be implemented in 2010).
