Experience Sharing by Students in Internships

CCCU has been in collaboration with the Hospital Authority (HA) in its offer of summer internship places to CCCU associate degree students since 2010 – the ‘Summer Internship Programme in Hospital Authority (Kowloon West Cluster)’.  Selected student interns are placed in different administration, finance, human resources, IT, nursing or clinical department offices of various hospitals under HA for about seven weeks during the summer.  Apart from internship work, career talks and hospital visits are also arranged for students participating in the Programme to widen their exposure in the area of healthcare, rendering it an invaluable internship experience. In 2011, 28 CCCU students were selected for their internship positions where they were engaged in a wide range of diverse roles.

Cham Cheuk Wing
Associate of Business Administration (with Communication Studies in Chinese) 2009/10 cohort

In the summer internship programme, I worked in the Occupational Therapy Department of the Kwong Wah Hospital. I came across many new, interesting and unforgettable things. Although my programme study is not a health-related one, the things that I learnt from the internship programme are invaluable.

My work in the Department was to help take stock of the stationery there, set up a database to record the data of the different equipment, assist the work of the therapists, etc. I did enjoy the programme because all the staff members there were very nice to me. I still remember that on the last day of my work there, they held a farewell party for me, and it made me feel very warm. I think I will join this programme again next year if I have the chance!

Chan Wai Ching
Associate of Business Administration (China Business Management) 2010/11 cohort

During the internship period, I worked for the Infection Disease Unit of the Princess Margaret Hospital and the Planning and Commissioning Department (P&C) of the Caritas Medical Centre.  My work in the Centre was closely related to the procurement of equipment, and accuracy in the work was therefore very important. Without a doubt, it was the biggest job I have ever had; the significance of it has made me feel I was trusted and appreciated.

The experience of working in different hospitals has benefitted me a lot, while kind-hearted colleagues and meritocratic-minded supervisors have given me the impression that the Hospital Authority manages all the hospitals effectively. I hope I would be fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to work in any of these two hospitals or the Hospital Authority again in the future.

Chau Chui Yi
Associate of Science in Environmental Studies 2010/11 cohort

I worked as a student intern in the Paediatrics Department of the Kwong Wah Hospital in summer 2011. Apart from working there, I visited the Centre for Health Protection of the Princess Margaret Hospital, the Institute of Chinese Medicine, and many medical facilitates in those hospitals during the internship. Moreover, I witnessed an operation using an endoscope and a treatment of acupuncture. All these experiences have really impressed me a lot.

In this summer internship programme I came to learn more about the work of a clerical staff.  I find the job meaningful as I came to understand more about the operation of a hospital. It is my first time working in such a large public organization in Hong Kong, and I find the environment there totally different from that in school.

The members of staff there were really serious with their work. I learned how to be nice to everyone I met, how to work with my mentor, and that I need to have a good work attitude. It was a good time for me and a most constructive way to spend my summer vacation.

Cheung Ka Wing
Associate of Science in Applied Business Statistics 2010/11 cohort

I was assigned to the Department of Administrative Services of the Kwong Wah Hospital for my summer internship. I worked under the Quarters Management Team in the Hospital, and was asked to design a questionnaire and conduct a survey on the satisfactory level of staff towards the quarter services. We faced a lot of problems in doing the project, but my mentor and other staff were very nice to me and were eager to teach me. The project ended with a presentation. We had to present the survey results in front of all the head managers from different departments in a lecture theatre.

I am glad that I was given the chance to participate in this internship programme. As I study applied business statistics, the experience of conducting the survey helps my studies a lot. The work of the Quarter Management Team sounds easy, but the manager actually needs to handle many different kinds of problem. Much of the work there is related to that of other departments managing facilities, security, customer hotline, office management, etc. It showed me how a public enterprise is run. With the cooperation of my new friends there, I experienced a fruitful summer.

Cheung Sin Hang, Rebecca
Associate of Science in Applied Business Statistics 2010/11 cohort

I was assigned to work in the Administrative Division - Quality and Risk Management Team of the Kwong Wah Hospital in the summer internship programme. My job duty was to make the security guards there aware of work-safe behavior in order to reduce the number of cases of ‘incidents of duty’ (IOD). I surveyed and promoted safety awareness of the security guards in the Hospital.  An example would be the design of a slogan which is now posted on the all-in-one printer to remind them to be careful about the paper which may cut their fingers.

I would like to thank CCCU and the Hospital Authority for providing such an opportunity to broaden our horizon. I met a lot of people during the attachment programme. I have made lots of friends and they are not only our CCCU students but also students from different institutes. I learned more about a real work environment during this programme. It was really an unforgettable work experience!

Cheung Sin Kok, Cindy
Associate of Arts in Bilingual Communication Studies (English and Chinese) 2009/10 cohort

I am very grateful to the Hospital Authority and the Community College of City University for giving me a chance to participate in the summer internship programme. I have reaped much benefit from this experience. I was assigned to the Kwong Wah Hospital’s Out-patient Department as an assistant. Although it was busy working there, I felt jovial after finishing a whole day’s work because I really love helping others. The doctors, nurses and colleagues there were very nice to me and willing to teach me, and the whole department was full of joy and strong team spirit.

Through the programme, I have become a prudent and conscientious person. I need to deal with many important data and confidential information every day and was not allowed to make any minor mistakes as that would affect doctor’s diagnosis and may violate the privacy terms. I believe such work attitude will benefit me a lot. In those seven weeks I learnt much from the doctors, nurses and my colleagues. I would like to thank them for their patience and kindness in teaching me and giving me this opportunity to experience work in the Kwong Wah Hospital. I hope all CCCU students can grasp this golden chance to gain a valuable experience in the Hospital Authority Summer Internship Programme.

Cheung Wan Lui, Yuki
Associate of Business Administration (Marketing) 2009/10 cohort

In the summer attachment programme I was assigned to work in the Human Resources Department of Princess Margaret Hospital.  My main responsibilities included the recording of services, checking of staff’s vacation leave and promoting the E-payslip programme.  In recording services, I learnt how important it was to protect the privacy of their personal data and how hard the Hospital Authority has tried to work on that principle. Furthermore, I came to know much more about different staff groups. My supervisor also taught me a lot about the regulations of statutory holidays, public holidays and rest days. Such knowledge is very useful for me as I can apply them in different companies.

The promotion of the E-payslip programme had been a difficult task for me, but also a great opportunity for me to apply my marketing knowledge. I also went to a formal floor meeting of the Leave and Termination team where I experienced how a meeting was conducted and how communication was achieved between team members. To conclude, I did not actually expect a lot from the internship programme at the beginning. However, the managers in my department were nice to us, and they were confident about our ability and always cared about us. They empowered us to represent the staff of the Human Resources Department to teach other staff in the Hospital Authority. This internship programme has really provided me with a lot of valuable experiences that I cannot easily get from any other summer jobs.

Cheung Yi Ki, Aki
Associate of Science in Information Systems Development 2009/10 cohort

I worked in the Information Technology Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital in the summer internship programme. I am very happy that I was assigned to a department where the work was related to what I am studying in CCCU. During the seven weeks of the programme, I had to design and make some Christmas and New Year e-cards. I used Adobe Flash Professional CS4, Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4 to do some animations and movie makings.

The experience of working in a large company is not quite the same as that of doing a final year project or laboratory work as we need to have a very clear and detailed plan on doing the work in order to minimize working time and the chance of making mistakes. Consequently, I was required to present my work to my mentor, a senior hospital manager and a technical support assistant, for verification and validation.

The experience of being in a real work environment has been very valuable to me. There were many friendly colleagues there who were all willing to share with me their experiences and studies.

Fan Man Lai, Fancy
Associate of Social Science in Applied Psychology 2010/11 cohort

In the Summer Internship Program of the Hospital Authority I was assigned to work in the Infection Disease Center (IDC) of the Princess Margaret Hospital, and was mainly responsible for the administrative work such as data entry, sorting and graphic design. The documents I handled include simulation training evaluations, staff’s sick leave statistics and the inventory of equipment. I was very surprised to be given the chance to manage such variety of information and to learn the management system behind them.

Furthermore, I also had the chance to assist in the Infectious Disease Conference (IDC) 2011 and joined the nurse simulation training and my mentor’s meetings. Those activities had given me profound experiences and I have learnt something I had not expected. In addition, my mentor also arranged social gatherings for us and I am deeply impressed by his kindness.

As a result, I have gained a lot in different aspects in this programme. Apart from having been enlightened in software applications, I have also learnt how to be a good worker in the workplace through interaction with the staff there, while their sharing in work has provided valuable references for me. With all these useful experiences and trainings, I think I am now ready to enter a real work setting!

Hui Long Yin
Associate of Science in Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics 2010/11 cohort

I was assigned to the Administrative Service Division of the Hospital Engineering Service Department in the Yan Chai Hospital. My responsibility was to collect the information of spare parts in the store and enter the data into the computer system. Moreover, I need to obtain updated information on the locations of the biomedical equipment in the wards and treatment areas.

The seven weeks of internship has given me unforgettable memories. I witnessed the birth, illness and death of many people in the hospital. I still remember the time when all the relatives of a dying old man stayed behind to keep him company just before he passed away. It was at that moment I realized that life can be very precious. In addition, I visited the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department of the Hospital and saw many pretty babies there, giving me the feeling that life is colourful and meaningful.

Last but not least, I would like to say thank you to all the staff in the Engineering Service Department of the Yan Chai Hospital. They have taught me a lot that were both related and unrelated to my job duties there.

Hung Nga Wa
Associate of Business Administration (General Management) 2010/11 cohort

In the first week of the internship programme, I was asked to input some data in a procurement department handling asset management which I found very simple and sometimes even a bit monotonous.  The situation changed when I met the manager of the IT department. She knew I am skillful in making movies, so she let me help her produce four videos. I was very lucky as I could do what I love to.  She was very nice to me and even invited me to join the social gatherings with the Kowloon West IT departments.

Although the tasks given to me were not complicated, I have learned how a procurement department is run. For example, after orders were made, when the assets arrived at our department, we would not send them to the department where they should finally go, but would wait for the checkers to examine the assets first. However, not all assets would undergo the same process. Moreover, I find that the relationship between colleagues is very important in the workplace, and I believe I have done my best in the tasks I was given.

Lam Ho Lun, Nathan
Associate of Business Administration (Marketing) 2010/11 cohort
I joined the Summer Internship Programme of the Hospital Authority 2011. I was assigned to the Quality & Risk Management Team of the Administrative Services Division of the Kwong Wah Hospital. Here I would like to share my internship experiences and the details of my work there.
In fact, I did not have any idea about risk management before joining the summer internship programme. Regarding my job duties in the Quality & Risk Management Team Department, I was required to analyze the rise of the staircases in the Kwong Wah Hospital. In the final week of the internship programme, I presented to the whole managerial team in the lecture theatre of the Kwong Wah Hospital. I have also created an animation for the 100th Anniversary of the Kwong Wah Hospital. This animation will be played in the Hospital’s internal movie players for promoting their 100th anniversary. For me, I feel much honoured that I can contribute to the Hospital and that the seven-week internship programme has been an unforgettable experience.

Lau Wing Hei
Associate of Science in Applied Business Statistics 2010/11 cohort

I was assigned to work in the Administrative Services Division – Quarters Management Team in the Kwong Wah Hospital. In this programme, I have accomplished a research about the management of the quarters in the hospital.  My work was to devise a questionnaire for the research, interview the occupants of the quarters, and finally prepare and present a report on the research findings in a lecture hall.  The research is significant to the hospital since it helps improve the environment of the quarters in the hospital.

I find it very different studying in school and working as an intern. In school, teachers will provide you all the materials you need to know and the most important thing is to recite all those materials. However, no one will teach you everything in the workplace. You must take the initiative to obtain the information you need and apply the information in your project.

In this internship programme, I learned how important it is to take initiatives in learning. Moreover, I am very happy to have the chance to work in the Administrative Services Division in the Kwong Wah Hospital because the colleagues there were very nice and they taught me a lot. I really have a great experience there!

Lau Yuen Kwan
Associate of Business Administration (Accountancy) 2010/11 cohort

In my summer internship in the Hospital Authority, I was first assigned to the Princess Margaret Hospital to help the Infectious Disease Centre there prepare for a large annual conference. Although I was not the one to organize the conference, I learnt a lot from the preparation work of such a big event. Even though a lot of preparation work has been done in advance, there were many occasions where contingencies still arose during the conference.  I learnt how people cooperated and coordinated among themselves in handling such contingencies and such knowledge was absolutely valuable to me.

After that I was assigned to do clerical work in the Geriatric Day Hospital of the Kwong Wah Hospital, and I think I had done a great project there as I have made an inventory record for the whole department! I learned something very important in doing this kind of inventory recording – in a large organization, all inventories must be organized in a systematic way. Everything ought to be managed carefully so as to avoid unnecessary losses. Being a business student, this summer internship programme has given me an excellent opportunity to learn about the operation of a large organization and a valuable experience of organizing events. I look forward to work in hospitals again.

Law Ka Yi
Associate of Business Administration (Marketing) 2010/11 cohort

It was my great pleasure to be attached to the Hospital Authority in its summer internship programme as it is a huge organization and there were not many internship vacancies. The seven weeks’ programme has enabled me to gain some work experience in the medical field and this was something not usual for an art student like me.

I was assigned to work in the Princess Margaret-Kwai Chung Hospital’s library. Apart from the work of a librarian which included shelving, shelve-reading and preparation of journal binding, I was also asked to edit the library’s webpage! I have learned how to create a better webpage for the library and how a librarian worked.

Hospitals are not only places for healthcare. Doctors and nurses learn from books in the hospitals’ libraries and have rest there during lunch-time. Without librarians who help keep these useful places in good condition, staff would not be able to enjoy comfortable areas to read books and take good rest.

Lee Mei Shan
Associate of Science in Applied Business Statistics 2010/11 cohort
In the HA Summer Internship Programme 2011, I participated in a research activity which was about habitual and non-habitual snorers. I found that doing research is important to discover new relationship among diseases. It enables medical staff to have deeper understanding about different diseases, and it facilitates them to conduct further study about the diseases.
Moreover, I helped the Sleep Service clerks input data for various studies. I also provided assistance for scanning patients’ information into the intranet of the Kwong Wah Hospital. Doing the above work can definitely help medical and nursing staff in accessing medical reports of patients efficiently, and it also improves the efficiency of the provision of services to patients.
During the internship, I learnt a lot from my colleagues in the Department of Pediatrics. Apart from their past and valuable experiences, I learnt the practical aspects of statistics, and this was particularly useful to me as a student studying statistics. Now I know more about the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data in research activities. My communication and analytical skills have also been improved due to the attachment programme.

Lok Ka Yi
Associate of Arts in Translation and Interpretation 2009/10 cohort

My job duty was to conduct survey on patients who have emotional problems due to different reasons. The target of the survey was the patients of diabetes and other general patients. Conducting such a survey could help the clinic to screen out patients who might suffer from depression, anxiety or other emotional problems before it was too late.

The first week of researching was a tough week for me. People often cried while doing the questionnaire and some of them even told me that they were thinking if they should end their lives. The situation shocked me greatly as I have never had counseling experience before, and I did not know how to comfort them and convince them to visit the social worker there. I learnt that every one has emotional problems from time to time. Sometimes, they may not need many professional advices, but a good listener to let them unleash their negative feelings deep in their hearts. What I have done was not merely a researcher but a listener to hear their worries.

I have my eyes opened more widely to this world after participating in the internship programme. What is more, I have learnt some researching skills as well as skills to interact with people that I did not know. All these skills and experiences will be very useful to me.

Mak Wai Man, Raymond
Associate of Science in Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics 2010/11 cohort

In the HA Summer Internship Programme 2011, I was assigned to work in the Kwong Wah Hospital’s Health Information and Record Management Division. My job was to help the staff there file patients’ medical records which contained details of patients’ medical history and laboratory reports. Although the nature of the business and the work there were not directly related to my studies, I have acquired some valuable knowledge from the hospital’s record management system. What is even more important is that I could practice my interpersonal and communication skills in a real work environment and this is what I cannot learn from textbooks. I did not only use the computer and did paper work, but also had to communicate with different parties. That was really a very precious opportunity for me to see more, learn more and experience more in different aspects, and I therefore find it highly beneficial to my future career. I also came to learn the importance of the protection of data privacy.

Ng Chun Yin
Associate of Science in Network and Systems Administration 2009/10 cohort

The HA summer attachment programme has given me the opportunity to gain good insights into the work and significance of an IT department in a large organization. In the programme I was assigned to the IT department and was responsible for using a system to create e-forms and workflows which can help facilitate the process of handling form applications.  I have learnt some important programming skills during the internship programme which were certainly precious knowledge that would enable me to become more capable in my future career.

It is definitely my pleasure and honour to be able to take part in this internship programme. I find the work that HA assigned to me truly suitable for me as I am an IT student and it is very important that I was able to gain relevant experience from the programme. Furthermore, my ‘colleagues’ there are all amiable and approachable. My supervisor was very helpful in giving useful guidance in my work, and the work environment and atmosphere there was quite satisfying.  All in all, I am very glad to have had the chance to work there!

So Sin Ting
Associate of Business Administration (Accountancy) 2009/10 cohort

During the HA summer attachment period, I worked in the Human Resources Division (HR) of the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority, and my major duties were filing and the provision of assistance for the organization of a training programme. The training programme was designed for support-grade staff to learn how to use the ePayslip system. I have helped design the demonstration PowerPoint, posters and notecards, and it was an exciting experience for me to go to three hospitals to hold training programmes in the last week of the internship.  The training programme was necessary to assist the long-serving staff to use the ePayslip system smoothly.

I am glad that I was given the chance to join this attachment programme and meet my colleagues in the department where I work. We worked with and learned from each other, and have become good friends after 75 days of work.

Tam Nga Ting
Associate of Arts in Bilingual Communication Studies (Korean and English) 2009/10 cohort

Through working in the Quality and Safety Unit of the Hospital Authority, I participated in different types of activities: reviewing medical charts, designing posters on the handling of fragile patients for teaching purposes in the Unit, participating in a number of committee meetings and talks, etc. I even drafted a fire safety quiz for colleagues in the Caritas Medical Centre after attending the fire safety talk. A most special experience was the conducting of a survey on the level of satisfaction of patients in the Princess of Margaret Hospital. In conducting the survey, I got a better understanding on how to take care of interviewees’ feeling and how to communicate with them more effectively.

Previously I had the impression that the backup staff, like the staff in the Quality and Safety Unit, was not as important as doctors and nurses. Now after the internship programme I cannot imagine how a hospital could operate effectively and in an orderly manner without the help of those support staff. Though I could only provide limited help to the hospital during those two months, I am very proud of myself for having been a member in the Unit which works to contribute to the hospital’s future development and improvement.

Wong Hung Tat
Associate of Business Administration (General Management) 2009/10 cohort

I was assigned to work in the domestic portering team in the Kwong Wah Hospital for seven weeks in the HA Summer Internship Programme 2011. My job there was to observe and suggest improvements to the portering system. It was a wonderful experience. At first I did not realize the importance of the team. After a week’s observation, I found that it was in fact a very critical part of the organization that ensures the smooth running of the hospital.

During the internship I also visited different departments of the hospital including its intensive care unit and its emergency department. The internship experience has helped me gain an insight into the operation in a hospital.  It was a life-changing experience for me because my interest in the health sector has been deepened. I am now more determined to serve the public and I think I will pursue studies in the nursing field. Apart from that, during those seven weeks, I have talked to a wide range of people and this helped me develop my communication skills. I have made some new friends too, and they are all very supportive. I really enjoyed this internship experience.

Wong Tik Man
Associate of Science in Environmental Studies 2009/10 cohort

My main job in the Yan Chai Hospital during my participation in the HA Summer Internship Programme 2011 was to help promote the message of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). I was asked to finish a PowerPoint about OSH. The PowerPoint covered a lot of short questions for training the HA staff to join the OSH competition which was organized by the Hospital Authority to promote the awareness of OSH-related legislations and messages among the Kowloon West hospitals.

Apart from producing the PowerPoint, I acted as a model in a video in putting up correct postures after a hip operation. This would be very useful to help patients recover faster when they follow the postures in their daily life, e.g. the posture of walking up or down stairs, the proper use of special equipment after hip operations, etc. In the processing of producing the video, I learned a lot about Avascular Necrosis (骨枯) and how operations can help patients recover from this problem. As I am very interested in medical science, I find this part a very rewarding experience!

Wong Wai Sze, Frankie
Associate of Business Administration (Financial Services) 2009/10 cohort

My main duty in the summer attachment programme of the Hospital Authority was to interview patients on their understanding about their illness and collect related information for doctors in charge of those patients. It was challenging work since it required me to have close contacts with patients. Most of the patients I interviewed were elderly ones and were usually not very patient in answering my questions because of their hearing problems. Sometimes, when they faced some questions that they were not familiar with, they would shout at me and refused to continue the interview. Through such experience, I learned how to communicate with strangers, especially the elderly people. And I am now more confident to communicate with others in a polite way.

I am glad to have participated in this internship programme and gained this valuable work experience. I hope I can further utilize and apply the skills I learned from the programme in my study and my future career.

Yiu Yuk Lun
Associate of Science in Information Systems Development 2010/11 cohort

The internship work was truly suitable for me as I am an IT student. The programme has enabled me to gain relevant work experience which I found very valuable as not many students have the opportunity to experience real work that is relevant to their studies.

I performed a variety of duties during the internship period, including PowerPoint templates, Websites for Office 2010 training, Server migration from 2000 to 2008, a study on virtualization cloud computing, etc.

What is more, colleagues in the IT department were very kind to me and helpful. The work environment and atmosphere there was satisfying.  All in all, I am glad that I have joined this internship program and was given the chance to work in the IT Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Yu Sin Tung, Jasmine
Associate of Arts in English for Professional Communication 2009/10 cohort

I aspire to become a registered nurse after I participated in the summer student internship programme of the Hospital Authority (Kowloon West Cluster). It was a wonderful experience for me to learn what ambulatory care is about. I worked at the Out-patient Department in the Caritas Medical Centre. The Manager of the Department was my mentor and has provided a lot of opportunities for me to understand more about the organization and the operations of the Centre. My duties included the conducting of surveys, disposal and integration of medical records, etc. I helped my mentor to review the organization by conducting a survey on the daily work of the workers in the ward. I also helped dispose and integrate medical records in order to save more storage space and organize things in a systematic way.

I highly recommend this programme to all CCCU students. It is a very precious work experience. One will not only learn many professional terms and skills, but also have the chance to visit some interesting places in the hospital! Don’t miss this chance!

Yuen Yan Yan, Anita
Associate of Arts in Applied Chinese Studies 2009/10 cohort

I was assigned to work in the Kwong Wah Hospital in the Summer Internship Programme of the Hospital Authority 2011, and my major work there was to file patients’ medical records and prepare medical records for doctors’ meetings. The work has made me realize the importance of coordination between different parties in a ward. I also assisted the nurses in performing Lower Limb Venous System Examination, Carotid Duplex and Graft Surveillance Examination etc. by being a witness there, drafting examination results and refilling necessities like lubricating jelly and blankets in the vascular centre. The work has enriched my medical knowledge and broadened my horizon.

Furthermore, I am grateful for having the chance to “shadow” a nurse for an “A/N duty” which was particularly valuable for me to understand the work of a nurse and the daily routine work of a ward. I also proposed a green management plan to recycle used materials in the ward so as to encourage staff to achieve more efficient waste recycling in the ward and contribute towards the environmental cause by saving landfill space.  Through the above work I have established good rapport with the ward manager, doctors, nurses and ward assistants. They shared their special work experiences with me. I learnt a lot from them and everything I learnt there added value to my life.  I am most thankful for such an extraordinary and memorable work experience.
