Using the research in public financial management and performance management, this presentation discusses several key drivers of public administration research in the United States. It examines the merits, limitations, and possible impact of several popular underlying research principles on the development of public administration as an academic field of study. It elaborates why the tendency of public administration research to become more relevant may lead to its irrelevance in practice and why a "generalist" or an "interdisciplinary" view of public administration could be harmful to the development of the field.

XiaoHu Wang is Professor of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. He is the former chair of American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) Section on Public Performance and Management (SPPM). His most recent book is "Performance Analysis for Public and Nonprofit Organizations" (Jones and Bartlett, 2009). A newer edition of his book "Financial Management in the Public Sector: Tools, Applications, and Cases" (M.E. Sharp) will be available in 2010. In addition to performance management and financial management, he has also written articles in areas of accountability, citizen participation, leadership, and emergency management. Most recently, he has been working on projects of sustainability in public management.
