There is no doubt that people cannot not communicate. Research reveals that poor communications account for 70% of the problems in workplace while good communication provides a solid base for building an effective team. What is more, communication also influences team members’ relationship, responsibilities, promotion and even career paths.
This course aims to enhance students’ skills for communication and teamwork. The course will start with theories about communication, including the elements of communication, the process model of communication, classification of communications, barriers and enablers to effective communication, and various communication skills. The course will then introduce the phases of team development and the lifecycle of teamwork. Relevant communication skills will be matched with team development and teamwork accordingly. Students will formulate their own teams and practice the communication skills to perform the following team works in a series of action-based games and a mini-project: including a) identification of the common objective of the team, b) job division among team members and collaboration mechanism, c) planning and scheduling of the work, and d) implementation and control of the work.
