Aims of Major

Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals and offender rehabilitation. The major aims to produce degree-level graduates with a broad knowledge required to reflect on the concept of crime; professional competence to protect the public and maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest cities in the world; and skills to enable them to function effectively as personnel in the fields of policing, anti-corruption, correctional services and conflict resolution. They will be equipped with knowledge necessary to undertake managerial and executive responsibilities within the crime prevention and security professions. Students may also develop an interest in discovery and innovation to benefit society by providing solutions for crime control and reduction.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Major (MILOs)

  1. Describe a range of key concepts in social science theories and appreciate their contribution to criminology and criminal justice;
  2. Identify and criticize underlying assumptions and discover intervention steps of different types of informal and formal social control strategies;
  3. Apply and analyse different perspectives for explaining social problems and criminal behaviour;
  4. Evaluate the applicability of social science theories and develop innovative ideas in preventing crimes and creative ways of reducing re-offending in local context;
  5. Evaluate the function and operation of social institutions and law enforcement agencies;
  6. Conduct investigation of research independently; present research findings clearly and systematically to readers; and provide creative suggestions and/or solutions to crime prevention; and
  7. Design programs, generate alternatives, invent ideas, and construct cost-effective means for achieving informal and formal social control.

Students graduated with BSocSc Criminology will be eligible to be members of Asian Criminology Society.
