Course Aims

This course aims to teach students some key aspects of post-1949 socioeconomic development in China. Case studies are used to illustrate the changing patterns and dynamics of social relations and stratification in China. Major discussion topics include the class system in the Mao’s era, the job ranking system in the PRC, the danwei system in China, post-Mao economic reforms, and market transition and social stratification in post-Mao period.
