Course Aims

Japan has undergone drastic changes politically, economically, and socially in recent years. Like understanding other societies, one would not be able to understand contemporary Japanese society without knowing its past history and culture. Through introducing the various aspects of the society such as religion, life styles, festivals, political system, education system, creative industry and so on, this course aims to provide students an overall understanding of the Japanese society and develop their skills to further compare and contrast it with other cultures. Students are expected to be able to understand and critically analyse some social phenomena in contemporary Japanese society.
