Course Aims

This course introduces major genres in Korean literature through translated works. Students will be exposed to various types of the literature such as poetry, novel, essay, drama, chant, and folktale. Reading materials range from classical to contemporary literature, and oral tradition to women’s literature. In the process, students will be trained to describe the main characteristics of each genre in Korean literature and to comprehend the literature with social, cultural and philosophical aspects of Korea. All reading materials are in English and Chinese. No knowledge of Korean language is required.
