Course Aims

The course focuses on an introduction to current dominant trends of development programmes and policies. It will first offer critical perspectives and analytical tools to evaluate development actors, and then focus on various areas of development activities such as aid, philanthropic organisations, development banks, infrastructure projects, financialisation, microcredit, surveillance and military technologies, migration control, food systems, climate change and energy policies, and water resources. These topics will be assessed by readings of texts of dominant actors in these fields as well as of critical academic analyses on these topics. The focus will be on the identification of dominant actors in development and the analysis of their development strategies. Case studies in a group and a simulation exercise will complement the understanding of current development dynamics.
The course aims to equip students with a clear understanding of current dominant paradigms and approaches to project planning and management for development. Students are invited to assess the relevance of these paradigms and approaches. In particular, students are expected to focus on public interest issues, understand how various stakeholders - including government authorities, civil society organisations, market forces and the media - interact, and access and evaluate relevant information sources on development planning and management.
