Course Aims

This course aims to introduce to students a range of issues involving women and politics, including women’s political participation and representation, the history of women’s movements and political divisions among women. Because women’s involvement in the political arena is informed by their roles and status in society at large, the course will also examine sociological, economic, and feminist research on such topics as gender, youth, class, power, inequality, discrimination, and employment practices. It also looks into the recent developments in women’s political advancement in Asia’s politics and governance. It does so by examining the impact of broad changes, such as democratic reforms, economic transformation, and social turmoil, on women’s political representation in the day-to-day decision making and implementation.

This course offers students a rigorous and comparative historical exploration of gender and politics in Asia and to explore the significance of gender in politics of the past, present, and future. The course also examines various factors contributing to Asian women’s political advancement. The course will train students to be able to analyse problems concerning gender and politics in Asia and beyond.
