Department of Biomedical Sciences – City University of Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong has achieved phenomenal growth since its establishment as a University in 1994. To date, it has a student population of more than 20,000 enrolled in more than 130 programmes at the associate degree, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University is located at Kowloon Tong, a central location of Kowloon district. CityU has been ranked 55th in the world, 7th in Asia, and 4th in top 50 universities under 50 years old in 2016 QS World University Rankings. The Department of Biomedical Sciences was established by the University in January 2014 to develop strategic growth areas of life sciences. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and has recently recruited 28 top-notch researchers to our faculty. The Department also carries out internationally competitive and cutting edge research in biomedical sciences, promotes inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary collaborations, and facilitates the translation of basic research to industries. Our research focus/expertise of the current faculties include: (1) Neuroscience; (2) Cancer Biology; (3) Regenerative Medicine; (4) Biotherapy and Nanomedicine; (5) Infectious Diseases and Immunity.

  3. Interdisciplinary PhD Programme in Veterinary Sciences in collaboration with Cornell University (administered by College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences)


Each successful applicant will receive a stipend of HKD16,200 (HKD20,000 for HKPFS recipients)* per month.

* Subject to review in September every year

Entrance Requirements

  • Basic requirement: holds a Bachelor’s degree (first class honours or equivalent) or Master’s degree from a recognised university.
  • English requirement: TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based); or IELTS score of 6.5; or CET-6 score of 490 (on a case-by-case basis, not accepted for HKPFS applications).
