Study Load

Study Load (Full-time Undergraduate Students)

Students are permitted to register 12 to 18 credit units in normal semesters and no more than 7 credit units in the Summer Term [AR 10.1 and 10.2].

Students can seek approval from the head of their home academic units to reduce/exceed the permitted study load [AR 10.3]. Justifications and supporting document should be provided. Approval will only be granted in very exceptional cases.


  • Application for reduce/exceed the permitted study load can be made via the electronic form on AIMS » Course Registration » Application for Add/Drop of Non-Web-enabled Course & Study Load Adjustment.

  • Students on academic probation may be advised/ required to take a reduced study load. Please check the study load permitted in each semester/term on AIMS » Course Registration’ » Course Registration Records.

  • Students who are approved to take a reduced study load of 6 credit units or below in normal semester, 50% of the tuition fee will be charged for the semester [Regulations on Tuition Fees 5.12(a)].

  • Students please also observe that there are maximum credit units permitted for Bachelor's degrees [AR 4.1, 4.3, 6.4 and 6.5]. Students pursuing double major/double degree or those who have been granted special permission might exceed the maximum credit unit limit.

  • If students have reached the maximum credit units permitted for their studies, they are not allowed to register for further courses.

  • For students (except Advanced Standing II students) who are required to take LC0200A & LC0200B English for Academic Purposes 1 & 2 (3 credit units each) and/or CHIN1001 University Chinese I (3 credit units), the credits earned from these courses will be counted in the maximum credit units permitted.
