Dear alumni,

A real leader must have vision. Visionary leadership is very much the power behind the distinguished achievements of Dr Haywood Cheung, one of our most successful alumni. Dr Cheung, Executive Director of Target Insurance (Holdings) Limited, is a holder of EMBA and DBA degrees from CityU, and a member of the Alumni Advancement Committee of the City University of Hong Kong Foundation. So we are delighted that Dr Cheung was selected for the 5th Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his achievements and contributions to his profession, the University and Hong Kong society.

Distinguished Alumni AwardDr Cheung’s distinguished career is characterised by over thirty years of outstanding experience in the finance industry. He serves as President of the New Territories General Chamber of Commerce and President of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society. In addition to business success, Dr Cheung has made important contributions to education, numerous public services, and alumni advancement at CityU. His far-sighted leadership, care for Hong Kong society and passion for CityU mark him out as an exceptional role model for our alumni and students. In sharing the keys to their success at the Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony on 22 March, both Dr Cheung and Dr David Harilela, our Honorary Graduate, highlighted how success is not just about personal achievement but also involves a commitment to give back to society.

We are equally thrilled to learn about the success story of Mr Harsh Agrawal, a 2017 graduate from the School of Creative Media. He was part of the animation team behind Coco, which won the award for the Best Animated Feature at this year’s Oscars in the US. Mr Agrawal is now a leading animation artist, contributing to the industry with the talent and knowledge he developed at CityU.

Another exciting piece of news is that an executive classroom equipped with advanced facilities in the Lau Ming Wai Academic Building was named after Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak at a ceremony on 16 March. Dr Shi, who holds an EMBA degree from CityU, is Chairman and Founder of Brilliant International Group Limited. He is a renowned industrialist and a dedicated alumnus who has done a great deal for CityU over the years. We thank Dr Shi sincerely for his generosity.

Thanks are also due to another group of highly dedicated and generous alumni: the former Standing Committee members of the CityU Convocation who have given CityU outstanding support over the years; and members of the newly elected Sixth Standing Committee who took up office in January. I look forward to the new members’ continued support in the days ahead.

Appreciation is extended to another section of the campus community: the Marathon runners. I had the great pleasure to lead a massive delegation of CityU athletes for the 10th successive year at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon in January, running alongside many students, staff and alumni, united in solidarity.

This year was particularly special. In this race, experienced runners from CityU ran the entire course together with students with special needs from Mary Rose School in Kowloon. This collaboration demonstrated the spirit of the marathon and the value of the high level of inclusivity embraced by the University. I would like to thank personally all our runners as well as the volunteers who boosted morale with their cheering throughout the race.

As you may well know, CityU strongly supports One Health and the sustainability of our agriculture and livestock industry. So I was delighted to see that the organic garden on the rooftop of the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building produced such a wonderful crop last month. Green-fingered CityU students, staff and alumni harvested about 100 kilogrammes of vegetables in all. The produce was donated to grassroots volunteer Mr Chan Cheuk-ming, aka Ming Gor of Sham Shui Po, famed for preparing the Caring Box Meals for the disadvantaged.

On a similar theme, I would like to share with you on a final note that CityU recently acquired a piece of farmland at Wo Tong Pui, Lam Tsuen in Tai Po where we will set up a demonstration dairy farm. This acquisition has brought us a step closer to achieving our goal of establishing a modern and innovative farm in Hong Kong that can be used for highlighting the best practices in modern agriculture. This development will benefit the students and researchers working in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, and greatly enhance our vision for One Health and food safety in Hong Kong and beyond.

Best wishes to you all, good health and success in all your endeavours.
