Dear alumni,

As we start another academic year here at CityU, I am delighted to inform you that we have just launched Hong Kong’s first undergraduate programme in veterinary medicine in our pioneering School of Veterinary Medicine. This six-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) programme is being developed jointly with Cornell University and has been endorsed by the Hong Kong SAR Government. Designed to meet the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council’s accreditation standards, this ground-breaking BVM will respond to the increasing demand for well-trained and accredited veterinary surgeons in Hong Kong and beyond.

The BVM is a huge step forward for Hong Kong in terms of combating increased health threats arising from emerging zoonotic diseases, food safety, aquaculture and other public health issues. The programme will admit the first cohort of students in 2017-18, greatly expanding educational choices and career paths for our youth, creating a regional centre of excellence for veterinary medicine, and providing a focal point for the One Health initiative in Hong Kong.

The BVM is also an important milestone in the development of world-class professional education at CityU.

Another milestone, recorded in September, was CityU’s ranking in global rankings. We have moved up two places to 55th in the 2016-17 World University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). We have also jumped at least 82 places from last year to become 119th in this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Our alumni’s strong support and contributions have played an essential role in these outstanding achievements.

It was also with great delight that we received the findings of the University Grants Committee’s annual graduate employment survey for full-time 2014-15 undergraduates. The survey revealed that our graduates’ salaries have risen by 9.4%, the highest increase among all graduates from the eight publicly funded higher education institutions in Hong Kong. The average salary increase was 6%, and so clearly CityU alumni are in great demand and highly valued by their employers!

More good news is that we have conferred honorary awards on six individuals from a broad range of professional backgrounds. Each one has made outstanding contributions to CityU and Hong Kong society over the years. Joining us this year as Honorary Fellows are Mr Winfred Chan Hon-pun; Ms Shirley Chan Suk-ling, JP; alumna Ms Dilys Chau Suet-fung; alumnus Dr Haywood Cheung; Professor Michael Kotlikoff; and Ir Dr the Hon Lo Wai-kwok, SBS, BBS, MH, JP. Meanwhile, Honorary Doctorates will be conferred on Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, GBS, JP, Mr Yeung Kin-man, JP, and Professor Ada Yonath.

CityU’s professional education is creative and for the world. To introduce CityU’s education courses to global learners via the internet, we introduced our first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) in September 2016. The course, titled “Foundation of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China”, will be taught by Dr Sun Hongyi, Associate Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. The second course, which will be taught by Dr Zheng Bo, Assistant Professor in the School of Creative Media, and due for release soon, will look at socially engaged art in contemporary China.

Please feel free to recommend our veterinary medicine programme and our online MOOCs to your friends and family members. CityU alumni are especially most welcome to register for the MOOCs!

Best wishes,
