17 September 2015

Dear alumni,

I hope you have had an enjoyable summer break from your busy schedules. CityU is at the start of another exciting academic year and the implementation of our new Strategic Plan 2015–2020.

The recent generous donation of HK$200 million from Mr Yeung Kin-man to the University is a strong demonstration of the community endorsement of CityU’s development and educational aspirations, which is well represented by the latest surge to 57th in the QS 2015 World University Rankings. We are very grateful to Mr Yeung for his generosity.

The founder of Biel Crystal, the world’s largest manufacturer of glass covers and touchscreens for mobile phones, Mr Yeung is an outstanding yet humble and low-key entrepreneur who built his success on the foundations of entrepreneurship in science and engineering. He is living proof of the pragmatic and diligent spirit traditionally found among Hong Kong people. Mr Yeung’s generous gift will be used to further enhance our student overseas exchange programmes, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and other strategic developments.

Enhancing community engagement and the CityU brand are core areas in our new Strategic Plan. Thanks to the support of alumni, students and staff members, the CityU Marathon Club, a voluntary interest group, will be launched at an inauguration ceremony on 25 September. The Club aims to promote the marathon spirit and campus solidarity. I hope you will support the Club and join us at the annual Hong Kong Marathon, which is now an integral event in the University calendar.

I would also like to share with you that we have launched a new marketing logo. The new design, which reflects the dynamism and progressive spirit of the University, is part of a refreshed branding campaign that aims to engage stakeholders, build support and communicate clearly to the public the values that the University stands for.

The CityU family is indeed growing fast and thriving well. We held two memorable alumni events on the mainland in July this year. There were some 140 alumni who participated in the Shanghai event, which also marked the inauguration of the “CityU Shanghai Alumni Chapter”. I also shared University updates with some 70 alumni at another alumni gathering in July, this time in Beijing. The event was organised by the CityU Beijing Alumni Association. I would like to thank our alumni for their enthusiasm and I wish our Alumni Chapters great success in all their endeavours.

Last but not least, CityU will be hosting the conferment ceremonies for the University’s Honorary Fellows and Honorary Doctorates in the coming months. It is a huge honour to have these distinguished individuals joining the CityU family. Please look out for further details.

Best wishes, and I hope to see you at similar forthcoming events!
