2009 Congregation

Taking place from 10 to 19 November, the 2009 Congregation has seen the CityU’s achievement in producing 9,254 graduates through its provision of quality professional education. The University also conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon five outstanding persons including Dr Simon Ip Sik-on (葉錫安博士), Professor Justin Lin Yifu (林毅夫教授), Professor Susumu Tonegawa (利根川進教授), Professor Wong Chi-huey (翁啟惠教授) and Professor Zhang Jie (張杰教授), in recognition of their significant contribution to the well-being of society at the Honorary Awards Ceremony held on 10 November. Nobel laureates, academicians converge on CityU for science summit

Three Nobel laureates and 11 world-renowned academicians joined the conference "Where is Science Going in the 21st Century?" on 22-23 October to discuss the future directions of scientific advancement. The science summit was one of the signature events for CityU’s 25th anniversary. Share its report HERE.

Council Chairman is conferred Honorary degree at Lingnan University

The Hon Leung Chun-ying, Council Chairman of CityU, was conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences of Lingnan University on 29 October in recognition of his contribution to education, business and the community. Click HERE for details.

CityU awards scholars for their research excellence

Three academics including Chair Professor Yang Tong from the Department of Mathematics, Chair Professor Leung Kwok from the Department of Management and Professor Cheng Sheung-tak from the Department of Applied Social Studies of City University of Hong Kong received the Research Excellence Awards 2009 for their outstanding achievements. Indie film by SCM instructor shines at Korean film festival

Dead Slowly, a film directed by Miss Rita Hui Nga-shu, Instructor of the School of Creative Media at CityU, has become the first Hong Kong film selected to compete for the New Currents Award at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival since its establishment in 1996. Graduates and students of SCM were invited as part of the production team. Share their glory HERE.

Pioneering wireless technology research gains international recognition

The paper “Optimal Design of a Hybrid Winding Structure for Planar Contactless Battery Charging Platform”, co-authored by Chair Professor Ron Hui Shu-yuen, Department of Electronics Engineering of CityU, and PhD graduate of the same department, Dr Ken Liu Xun, has been selected for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power Electronics Society Transactions Prize Paper Award 2009, in recognition of their contribution to the research on wireless charging platform. Structural engineering academic earns prestigious Australian honour

Chair Professor Sritawat Kitipornchai, Head of the Department of Building and Construction at CityU, has been elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. The accolade goes to Professor Kitipornchai in recognition of his outstanding research and world-renowned publications in structural engineering and solid mechanics. Read his achievement HERE.

Cross country runners bring back trophies

The CityU Cross Country Teams excelled in the inter-collegiate competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong on 31 October and 1 November. Our Women’s and Men’s Teams came 2nd and 3rd respectively in their divisions, and won the overall third prize in the race. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements!


Network Flourishes and Communication Strengthens

CityU celebrates anniversary with heavenly tunes

More than 1,000 alumni, students and staff enjoyed the joyful tunes in “Heaven, Earth, Man” Silver Jubilee Anniversary Concert, an outdoor concert held at the University Circle on 31 October. Twenty-five alumni and students paraded a flag around the venue to demonstrate full support of the University’s anniversary. Share its joy HERE.

Alumni social workers socialise at reunion dinner

More than 120 social work alumni, teachers and students showed they were "United for Success" at their reunion dinner organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies and the Preparation Committee for the Social Work Alumni Association on 30 October.

Alumni come home for supporting mentorship programme

More than 60 participants, including alumni, staff and students attended the kick-off ceremony of the Information Systems Alumni Mentorship Programme held on 29 October. Enthusiastic alumni participated in this meaningful programme to provide guidance to mentees on career development.

Anniversary student banquet packs them in

A rich programme of activities to mark the Silver Jubilee attracted more than 2,500 CityU community members and distinguished guests to the annual banquet organised by the Students’ Union on 21 October. One of the highlights involved a time capsule that incorporated written wishes collected from guests. HERE goes the story.

Council Chairman discusses leadership traits

More than 100 alumni and students learned what it takes to be a good leader when they attended a talk on "Nurturing Future Leaders: From Student to Professional” delivered by University Council Chairman, The Hon Leung Chun-ying GBS JP on 19 October. The talk was co-presented by Alumni Civility Hall and CityU Convocation.
