To celebrate the University’s 25th Anniversary and the 21st Anniversary of the Department of Applied Social Studies, the Preparation Committee for the Social Work Alumni Association of CityU is organising a reunion dinner for social work alumni on 30 October 2009 (Friday), at 7.30pm, at 5/F Student Canteen (with catering by Shing Hin Chinese Restaurant). With the theme United for Success, the dinner will feature a review of the Department’s development, performance and a talk on the

Become a volunteer to build homes for needy
Alumni are invited to join the Habitat for Humanity’s voluntary force in their “2009 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project” from 15 to 21 November led by the former US president Jimmy Carter and his wife to help build homes in five poverty-hit regions bordering the Mekong River including China, Cambodia, etc. Enrolment is now open for the Sichuan project, so

CityU confers six ardent supporters with Honorary Fellow titles

Six distinguished persons including three CityU alumni were bestowed the title of Honorary Fellow of CityU in recognition of their distinctive contribution to the development of, and service to, the University at the "Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony" held on 23 September. The distinguished Honorary Fellows are Professor Chan Kei-biu, MH, Mr Chan Tai-ho, Mr Andrew Fan Ka-fai (alumnus), Mr Peter Ho Ka-nam (alumnus), Mr David Hui Yip-wing (alumnus), and Mr Gabriel Yu Chi-ming. Alumna of School of Creative Media portrays the life of a 200-year-old Sha Tin village in her debut picture book
Rainbow Leung Hiu-man (pen name Lee Heung-lan), one of the eight winners in the Second Young Writers’ Debut Competition, published her first picture book – Wo Che Village earlier. Some of her original paintings are on display until 18 October at Art & Culture Outreach. Read her interview.

CityU sworn into international honour society
CityU chapter of the international honour society Kappa Delta Pi was inducted on 22 September in a solemn swearing in a ceremony conducted on campus. The induction into the century-old society is a first for a university in Asia, reflecting CityU’s successful and continued dedication to continuous professional growth. Biology and Chemistry student brings home the accolade
Eva Loi I-ha, Year 2 MPhil Biology and Chemistry student, won the Otto Hutzinger Student Award at the 29th International Symposium on Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants (Dioxin 2009) held in Beijing for her paper titled Partitioning Behaviour and Trophic Transfer of Perfluorinated Compounds in Hong Kong Mai Po Tidal Shrimp Ponds, China.

Silver Jubilee Reunion: Ocean Park Night makes a splash
2,500 CityU members including alumni, students and their family members attended the "Silver Jubilee Reunion: Ocean Park Night" held on 19 September organised by Alumni Relations Office to celebrate CityU’s 25th Anniversary. At the kick-off ceremony at the Ocean Theatre, President Professor Way Kuo shared with participants the recent development of the University and took part in the performance with dolphins and sea lions at the Theatre. Various alumni associations also seized the opportunity for reunion gathering. Special thanks should go to the alumni donors Mr Andrew Fan, Mr David Chiu, and Professor Ng Tat-lun who offered generous sponsorship for the event. reunite under full moon
More than 250 alumni and University members held a joyful reunion at the "CityU Banquet (Alumni Edition)" on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Organised by the CityU Convocation as one of the celebratory activities for the University’s 25th anniversary, the banquet featured popular performances by the CityU Chinese Orchestra, CityU Singers and Magic Society. A highlight was the prize presentation for winners of the "Golden Memories in CityU" Photographic Collection.

Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai speaks on the rise of China
Some 100 participants including alumni and students gathered at the University’s Student Residence Multi-Function Hall on 17 September to meet Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai (范徐麗泰博士) in the Civility Dialogue Series titled The Rise of China & University Students in Hong Kong presented by the Alumni Civility Hall. Explorer tells how human acts threaten environment
In her talk entitled Dr Lee’s Exploration of the Arctic Region – A Recent Update organised by CityU Convocation on 15 September, Dr Rebecca Lee shared her insights and adventures on polar explorations, and what motivated her to establish the Polar Museum Foundation. Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Charity Walk
Alumni joined a group of University members including staff, students and their families and friends to take part in the "Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Charity Walk" in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. Money raised for this charity walk held on 27 September would be donated to the Community Chest of Hong Kong to help the needy.
