Abstract
Radon is classified as Class A human carcinogen (USEPA 1989; WHO 1987; ICRP 1981). The main source of radon in Hong Kong comes from concrete used for buildings. In Hong Kong, there are about 340 people died in lung cancer linked with radon every year. Smokers bear 3 times the risk of nonsmokers. There is an urgent need for the development of a radon mitigation measure. A radon-proof emulsion paint has thus been developed that has a radon mitigation property. It is environmental-friendly and harmless to human beings. It does not have any awful or irritating smell, nor any emission of toxic, awful or irritating vapour that may cause contamination at disposal. The paint is free from Volatile Organic Compound (V.O.C.) and the heavy metal contents lie within the safety level specified by the Standards of ASTM. A putty/skim-coat has also been developed that works together with the paint to achieve a better anti-radon result.
