Abstract
The Centre for Coastal Pollution and Conservation was established as one of the five Areas of Excellence in City University of Hong Kong, and is also the leading player in one of the eight ¡§Areas of Excellence¡¨ selected by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. The Centre focuses on ecotoxicology, pollution monitoring, pollution control, conservation and risk assessment. A suite of toxicity testing protocols developed by the Centre has been adopted by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the official tests for legal control of oil dispersants. The same suite of tests have also been used for impact assessment in other major development projects, including the multi-billion dollar Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme and impact assessment of cooling water discharges. The Centre has been commissioned by the Hong Kong SAR Government to conduct a number of milestone consultancy studies, including the development of a bioindicator system for marine pollution monitoring (a $8.3 million project), the establishment of marine water quality objectives for the protection of living resources in Hong Kong waters (a $4.5 million project), and a quantitative study on benthic communities in coastal waters of Hong Kong (a $4.1 million project). The Centre has excellent facilities including a purpose built ecotoxicology laboratory with running seawater and toxicity testing facilities, walk-in environmental control rooms, and environmental chambers for algal culture. In particular, the Centre has excellent state-of-the-art analytical equipment such as the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer for metal determination, and Gas Chromatography, High-performance Liquid Chromatography and Capillary Electrophoresis for trace organic and toxin analyses.
