Objective
This present applied research aims to investigate the potential economic and ecological value of mangrove ecosystems and their conservation with the establishment of a new Mangrove R & D Centre in Futian, Shenzhen.

Abstract
Mangrove swamps are unique inter-tidal wetland ecosystems found in sheltered tropical and subtropical shores, and represent rich and diverse living resources. The Futian-CityU Mangrove Research and Development Centre is a newly built institution resulted from long-term fruitful collaboration with the mangrove scientists in Futian Nature Reserve and various universities in the Mainland. We have more than 20 years of research and development experience in mangrove ecological study, conservation and mangrove wetland-wastewater treatment. This solid knowledge has evoked our current interests in the potential applications of mangrove ecosystems, including:

(1) develop a constructed mangrove wetland system for wastewater treatment;
(2) transfer mangrove replanting technology;
(3) explore the economic value of mangrove plants;
(4) isolate bioactive compounds from mangrove fungi;
(5) investigate the ecophysiological role of endophytic fungi in mangrove plants; and
(6) understand the animal diversity, community structure and ecosystem dynamics.

Technological Breakthrough/Relevance to Industry/Society
(1) Mangrove planting and replanting techniques;
(2) Mangrove ecosystems as natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment;
(3) Ecological and economic value of mangroves;
(4) Mangrove conservation;
(5) A mangrove R&D Centre in Futian Nature Reserve, Shenzhen has been established.

(1)構建一套用於廢水處理的紅樹林濕地系統;
(2)積極推廣人工栽培種植紅樹林技術;
(3)研究紅樹植物的經濟價值;
(4)從紅樹林真菌中分離生物活性物質;
(5)調查紅樹植物內生真菌的生態生理作用;

(1) 建立和推廣紅樹植物再植技術;
(2) 建立一個用於處理廢水的人工紅樹林濕地系統;
(3) 探討紅樹林植物的葉、枝條、根、果實、種子及各微生物的經濟、生態與藥用價值;
(4) 紅樹林的保育;
