Abstract
DNA chips are small glass wafers resembling computer chips. Embedded with DNA molecules instead of electronic circuitry, the DNA chips are designed to probe a biological sample for genetic information that indicates whether the person has a genetic predisposition for certain diseases or conditions. A number of DNA chips have been successfully developed for early detection of the following diseases : prenatal diagnosis of Thalassemia, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Leukemia and Cancer, etc. The researcher is also working on an integrated Lab-on-a-Chip system for efficient drug screening that helps to speed up the discovery of new drugs; and the discovery and development of drugs from traditional Chinese medicine.
