Candy Y.P. Ng and Eva Y. Kong (PhD students) spent their visit to the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan, from 3 Feb to 11 Apr 2014.

At NIRS, Candy and Eva studied different radiation effects on zebrafish embryos in vivo using the SPICE (Single Particle Irradiation system to Cell) and NASBEE (Neutron exposure Accelerator System for Biological Effect Experiments) facilities there.

Viann W.Y. Choi and Candy Y.P. Ng (PhD students) spent their visit to the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan, from 8 July to 26 Aug 2013. They were invited and supported by the International Open Lab.

A delegation from the French Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire, or IRSN), including Marc-Gerard Albert (Director, International Affairs Directorate), Prof. Dr. Vincent Koundy (International Cooperation Manager, International Affairs Directorate), Dr. Isabelle Saves (Attaché Scientific & Academic Affairs, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau), and Maël Le Bail (Scientific Officer, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau) visited CityU and NRU on 9 April 2013.

Visit to Cadarache Center of IRSN

Peter Yu visited the Cadarache Center of IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) of France from 25 to 26 Mar 2013.

The visit was supported by the PROCORE-France/Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme. A research meeting was held together with Dr. Jacqueline Garnier-Laplace (Head of Division of Research and Expertise on Environmental Risks), Dr. Christelle Adam-Guillermin (Head of Laboratory of Radionuclide Ecotoxicology), Dr. Sandrine Pereira (Post-doctoral Fellow), and Candy Y.P. Ng (PhD student of NRU). Peter Yu also delivered a talk entitled "Study of low-dose radiation effects in zebrafish embryos" on 26 Mar 2013.

Peter Yu has been re-elected an Executive Councilor of the International Radiation Physics Society (IRPS) for the term 2012-2015.

Graduate Student Overseas Exchange - Candy Y.P. Ng

Candy Y.P. Ng (PhD student) will spend her visit to the Cadarache Center of IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) of France from 1 Oct 2012 to 31 Mar 2013.  

At IRSN, Candy will do research on multiple stressor effects of ionizing radiation and metals.

Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation - Andy L.Y. Cheung

Andy L.Y. Cheung (M.Phil. student) received the Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation at the 15th International Symposium on Toxicity Assessment (ISTA 15) held at the City University of Hong Kong from 3 to 8 July 2011.

His award winning poster presentation was entitled "Hormetic effect induced by alpha-particle-induced stress communicated in vivo between zebrafish embryos".

Graduate Student Overseas Exchange - Viann W.Y. Choi

Viann W.Y. Choi (PhD student) spent her second visit to the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba, Japan, from 6 Feb to 27 Feb 2011.

At NIRS, Viann continued to study the proton dose response and also studied the threshold number of protons for inducing adaptive response in zebrafish embryos in vivo using the microbeam facilities there. The following papers was/will be published from her work at the NIRS:

Dr P.L. Leung joined the then City Polytechnic in 1990. He later became concurrently the Director of the Ancient Ceramics Scientific Authentication Centre (ACSAC). He retired from his Associate Professorship in 2003 and was then appointed as an Adjunct Professor of the Department, while remaining as the Director of the ACSAC. He officially retired from the Adjunct Professorship as well as the Directorship of the ACSAC on 13 Nov 2009.

Peter Yu has been appointed as an Associate Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Nuclear Tracks in Solids held at Bologna of Italy (1-5 September 2008), which will be published in an issue of Radiation Measurements.

Vladimir P. Perelygin Prize winner - Yilun Law

Yilun Law (M.Phil. student) was awarded the Vladimir P. Perelygin Prize at the 24th International Conference on Nuclear Tracks in Solids held at Bologna of Italy (1-5 September 2008). 

There were more than 140 participants from 29 countries/regions. The Vladimir P. Perelygin Prize is an award made by the International Nuclear Track Society to honour a young scientist who presents the best paper (in terms of originality as well as the presentation) at an International Conference on Nuclear Tracks in Solids, which has been held biennially. Her award winning oral presentation was entitled "Study of influence of catechins on bystander responses in alpha-particle radiobiological experiments using thin PADC films".

Graduate Students Overseas Exchange - Yilun Law and Terry P.W. Wong

Yilun Law and Terry P.W. Wong (MPhil students) visited the Department of Radiation Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and were hosted by Prof. Kathryn Held from 18 Feb to 15 May 2008. 

At Harvard, Yilun and Terry mainly studied bystander responses induced by X-ray in rat embryo cells.

Graduate Student Overseas Exchange - Leo C.T. Man

Leo C.T. Man (MPhil student) visited The European Network on Ion Track Technology (EuNITT) and was hosted by Prof. Reimar Spohr in Darmstadt, Germany from 14 Jan to 5 Mar 2007. Prof. Spohr was the recipient of the prestigious Walker's Prize from the International Nuclear Track Society in 2006. 

At EuNITT, Leo mainly studied the influence of surfactant on the ion track etching for the polycarbonate film. "... the experimental techniques I learnt in this period provided me valuable information in the field in which I am working, as I can try to apply it on the CR-39 detectors we used in our own laboratory," Leo said. "It is also a great opportunity to learn and work with a great scientist." A paper was published from Leo's  works at the EuNITT:

Dr. Mike Stokes joined the then City Polytechnic in 1985, and has been a staff with the Department of Physics and Materials Science since its inception in 1993. He has been the Associate Head and Head of the Department. During his headship, the Nuclear Radiation Unit (NRU) was formed in 1997.
