Research Degree Studies The Department provides research degree studies in a variety of policy-oriented areas within sociology, anthropology, political science, and international studies. Admissions procedures are described in the website of the School of Graduate Studies, at: http://www.cityu.edu.hk/sgs/applicants/applicants_r.htm Applicants should note that proposed research degree studies at MPhil and PhD levels in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences should be related to one of the three approved areas-of-research in the Faculty. Our Department’s particular expertise is mainly within the category of Administrative and Policy Sciences (see below). We can supervise postgraduate students at MPhil and PhD levels, based on staff expertise (see the profiles of staff interests and publications, under ‘Staff’), on a wide range of policy-oriented topics, including: work and organizations, development studies, migration studies in China and the region, education and educational policies, social mobility, environmental issues and policies, women in the labour force and gender issues, ethnic relations and conflicts, religions and social policies, changing structures of the economy and of the labour force, influence of the state on social and political development, corporate social responsibility policies and trends, globalization and its impact in Asia, mass media and media policies in Asia, international organizations and their effects on Asian countries, the social impact of international trade and of international trade agreements, and other topics. Note: There are three areas of approved research degree studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHS), based on areas of internationally recognized expertise within FHS: Adminstrative and Policy Sciences, Communication, and Applications of Linguistics and Language Technology . The Department of Asian and International Studies mainly offers research degree studies under the category of Administrative and Policy Sciences, which is described broadly, with some examples, as follows: Administrative and Policy Sciences Administrative and policy sciences researchers work in the areas of governance, public and social policy, public management, and applied ethics. Expertise is in a range of applied policy areas, including social and community development, gender, ethnicity, ageing, labour, housing, healthcare, education, crime, environment and transport. In public management, there is a focus on �new� public management, and on East Asian �models� of public administration. The applied focus of this research is on: (1) China, including Hong Kong, with specialist expertise on government and administration, political and economic transformation, and social policy and development; and (2) Southeast Asia, with expertise in governance, labour relations, investment, management, and social policy and development. Research is supported by two Faculty Research Centres (the Governance in Asia Research Centre and the Southeast Asia Research Centre).
