In the Name of Sustainability: Development between environmental protection, economic growth, and equity. Brief Abstract: My research, following a postdevelopmental tradition that aims to deconstruct the ‘edifice of development’, will provide an overview and detailed understanding of how and to what ends and consequences visions of sustainability are being constructed, co-opted and invoked by the development sector in order to plan, implement and justify interventions in “underdeveloped” countries, and in people’s everyday life, through the increasingly popular, almost omnipresent concept of sustainable development. The research will furthermore explore if and how ideas of sustainability, on the other side, also have a potential to redefine development or even to replace the development paradigm altogether by examining local, independent and alternative sustainability projects that challenge mainstream notions and practices of sustainable development.
