An ethnographic research method workshop series was organized by Dr. Chan Yuk Wah for Hong Kong's Nepali youth in March 2019. The workshop series intends to impart ethnographic research skills to young Nepali to facilitate their future research on the Nepali communities. The workshops were supported by Dr. Chan's "Knowledge Transfer Grant" entitled "Empowering the Nepalese youth in Hong Kong through Engaged Anthropology and Ethnography-writing".

AIS hosted the 2nd CityU Sustainability Debate Series in March 2019.  Teams from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong faced off in the final and HKU emerged victorious arguing that the voice of the youth needs to be taken seriously when it comes to battling climate change.

Prior to the debate, the audience was treated to a presentation showing the impacts of climate change on the natural world by explorer Khoo Swee Chiow who focused on declining snowcaps on various peaks around the world that he Has personally travelled to over the last three decades.

After the debate, there was also a Q&A session with the Hong Kong leaders of the student climate strike, which brought new light to some of the issues at stake.

During September 2018, AIS designed and executed the first ever debating competition addressing sustainability among Hong Kong university students.  The innovative format included training sessions led by debating experts, a keynote address by an outside judge and the use of the Asian Parliamentary method.  Three judges awarded CityU as the top debating team, nudging out the HKU team.  We hope that this twice yearly competition will make a small contribution to the development of the next generation of environmental leaders in Hong Kong and the region.

The Forth Part in The CityU Sustainability Lecture Series
Speaker(s): Vivian Kong, Hong Kong Olympian; Josh Tetrick, CEO of JUST; Peggy Chan, widely regarded plant-based chef
Venue: Multi-Function Hall C, Student Residence, City University of Hong Kong

For the fourth part in the CLP-sponsored CityU Sustainability Lecture Series, AIS hosted three passionate speakers on the future of food on 21 September.  One of the major debates was whether societies should move towards new forms of cellular and plant-based protein or do their best to adopt veganism.  US food entrepreneur Josh Tetrick made the former argument and Hong Kong Olympian Vivian Kong and Hong Kong chef Peggy Chan made the latter argument.  125 CityU students and secondary school students were able to engage with the speakers afterwards as they led cooking demonstrations and served Josh's plant-based scrambled eggs and some of the menu items from Peggy Chan's restaurant (Grassroots Pantry).
