JUPAS Applicants
If you have applied for admission through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), you should not submit an application to the University for any programmes listed under the JUPAS system. Otherwise, your direct application to the University will not be considered and any application fee paid will NOT be refunded. However, you may still submit a direct application to the University for non-government funded programmes.

Students Currently Enrolled in a Government-Funded Programme

If you are currently enrolled in a government-funded bachelor's degree programme, you are advised NOT to submit an application. Such transfer applications normally will not be considered.

If you are currently enrolled in an associate degree / higher diploma programme, you can apply either directly to the University or through the JUPAS scheme, but not both. If you want the results of your current associate degree / higher diploma study to be considered, you may apply directly to the University.

Current CityU Students (Programme Transfer)
Current CityU students who wish to transfer to another programme of the same level should not submit an admission application. They should obtain the Programme Transfer Application Form from the Academic Regulations and Records Office Service Centre starting 1 February 2008 (tentative).

Application Fee (non-refundable and non-transferable)

The application fee is HK$100 per online application. This fee entitles you to only one choice of programme. Submit additional applications if you wish to apply for more than one programme. The application fee is non-refundable, non-transferable, and is required before processing.

You can pay the application fee of HK$100 using a credit card (VISA or MasterCard) through the application system.

Multiple Applications

If you wish to apply for more than one programme, click the 'Apply for a New Programme' button after logging into your application account.

If you have applied for more than one programme, your programme choices will receive the same priority in our processing.

Note that if you receive more than one admission offer from the University, you can choose to enroll in one programme only.

Programme Specific Documentations
  1. Supplementary Form

    Some programmes require the completion of a supplementary form. You will see a supplementary form section, where applicable, in your application account.

  2. Applicants of Associate of Social Science in Social Work Programme (code 1963)

    For employer-sponsored applicants, the supplementary form (which is available for download from your application account) should be submitted separately to Dr. Fok Shiu Yeu, Programme Leader (ASocSc Social Work), Division of Social Studies, City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong no later than 31 March 2008.

    Applicants with relevant experience may submit a work certificate or a recommendation letter stating the applicant's position and duration of service, as well as the name, post, address and contact telephone number of the authorized person of the organization. Please write down your name and HKID card/passport/travel document number on the certificate and send it to the above address no later than 31 March 2008.

  3. Applicants of School of Creative Media Programmes

    Applicants are highly recommended to submit a portfolio and/or a self-introduction letter to the School of Creative Media (SCM).

    Please mark your name, HKID card/passport/travel document number and the programme applied for when you submit the portfolio. Portfolio materials may include still photography, paintings/drawings, sculpture, musical compositions/performances, films/videos, software, multi-media productions, academic or creative writing, or other forms of imaginative activity. Please refer to the School homepage at www.cityu.edu.hk/scm for details regarding the deadline for the submission of portfolios.

Supporting Documents

You should submit supporting documents of your academic and/or professional qualifications (e.g. official transcripts, award certificates, examination/English test results) with your application, along with other programme specific documents as required. It is your responsibility (including CityU students) to provide full information to facilitate the evaluation of your application.

Selection decisions will mainly be based on the qualifications set out in your application. Additional information/documents provided to the University after the commencement of the selection process may or may not be considered, at the discretion of the relevant department.

You can either upload the documents through your application account or send photocopies of the documents IMMEDIATELY after the online submission of your applications.

Submitted documents will not be returned. Original documents (including CityU qualifications and public examination results) should be presented for verification at a later time upon request by the University. Provision of any false or misleading information or failure to supply the original documentation for verification will lead to disqualification of the admission application and any offer/enrolment made will be rescinded. All fees paid will not be refunded.

Application Acknowledgement
An acknowledgement of your application will be shown immediately after your successful payment of the application fee. In addition, an email to acknowledge receipt of your application will be sent to you.

Application Results

Depending on the programme you apply for, applications may be reviewed as soon as they are received. Most admission offers are issued during the months of March to July. The selection process is normally completed two weeks before the start of term (by June for non-local applicants).

You can check the application result through your application account.

If you are successful in your application, we will send you an official offer letter by post. No letter will be sent otherwise.

Tuition Fees (subject to yearly review)


The tuition fees are subject to yearly review.

  • Government-Funded Places

    For local students, the tuition fees for full-time government-funded places in the 2008/09 academic year are as follows, unless a higher minimum tuition fee is set by the HKSAR Government:

  • Non-Government Funded Places

    For programmes that are charged on a credit-unit basis and for non-government funded places, the tuition fee is normally set at a higher level. Details of the 2008/09 tuition fees can be found on the respective programme page of the Online Prospectus.

Use of Application Information Collected

The information that you provide in the application, including the HKID card/passport/travel document number, examination results and qualifications, will be used for the following purposes:

  • as a basis for various types of processing in relation to your application
  • as a basis for the selection of applicants for admission to the programmes offered by the University and for other relevant or related purposes
  • for obtaining from the relevant examination authority, assessment body or academic institution in Hong Kong and elsewhere information about your public examination results, records of studies or professional qualifications if deemed appropriate
  • for carrying out checks of your applications, and any records of studies in the University and other institutions in Hong Kong and elsewhere if deemed appropriate
  • for transferring relevant data to the student record system of the University upon the successful outcome of your application
  • for statistical and research purposes (with personal identifiers removed)

In accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, you have the right of access to and the right of correction of the information contained in the application form, and the right to request a copy of such data during the admission exercise. If you wish to obtain more information, please write to the Admissions Office. You may be charged a fee for each request. Data for unsuccessful applications will be destroyed at the end of the admission exercise.

Applicants with Physical or Other Disabilities
The admission of an applicant to the University is based on academic criteria and other specified entrance requirements. If you have a physical or other disability, you are not required to declare this at the application stage. However, if you need assistance regarding your application (e.g. to attend an interview), you may discuss your needs with the Admissions Office for special arrangement to be made if practicable.

The University reserves the right to cancel any programmes in which case all fees paid by applicants will be refunded.

Non-local Applicants

Non-local applicants are persons who require a student visa/entry permit issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department to study in Hong Kong.

Persons holding any of the following documents issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department are NOT considered as non-local applicants:

  • "Permanent Hong Kong Identity Card" (as distinguished from a "Hong Kong Identity Card")
  • dependent visa
  • full-time employment visa/work permit (for part-time study)
  • one-way permit for entry to Hong Kong
  • entry visa/entry permit for quality migrants
  • entry visa/entry permit for capital investment entrants

Student Visa
As a general rule, if you do not have the right of abode in Hong Kong, you will need to obtain a visa for studying in Hong Kong. However, if you are holding a dependant visa or a full-time employment visa/work permit (for part-time study) issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, you are considered as a local applicant and will not require a student visa. If you need advice on visa requirements, please consult the website of the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Due to immigration restrictions, nationals from Afghanistan, Albania, Cambodia, Cuba, Laos, North Korea (DPRK), Nepal and Vietnam are advised not to apply for admission. According to the policy set by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, student visas will not be issued for these countries.

Student Residence on Campus

Non-local applicants should note that although student residence is available on campus, there is no guarantee that accommodation in the student residence can be provided because of limited capacity. Priority will be given to (1) local and non-local full-time research students, (2) non-local students registered on full-time government-funded bachelor's degree programmes. For full-time non-local students who are registered on non-government funded taught postgraduate degree programmes, only a limited quota will be allocated, and a surcharge will be levied on their residence fee. Students should be prepared to arrange their own off-campus accommodation if deemed necessary.
