Document and retain records of all work regarding your project

Strictly limit the number of people and institutions/companies you involve in your project

When consulting faculty or others about your project be clear about the nature of their involvement (e.g. are you asking a professor a specific question or for a piece of advice or are you inviting her or him to join your project?

When you have a clear idea of your project, seek the advice for your institution's IP office on how to proceed. Many excellent ideas and projects are of great value but are not appropriate candidates for copyright or patent
