Abstract

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Protecting your intellectual property on a shoestring" will give a brief introduction to the students on various different types of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), namely patent, trademark, design right, copyright, geographical origin, circuit layout design, plant breeder's right, etc. This brief introduction also will suggest some very cost effective ways to protecting your IPRs, e.g. getting Design Rights protection for the costs of local postage only. This talk is often found to be beneficial for beginners and students on IPRs protection matters.

Short Bio

Ir. Dr. Tan is an entrepreneur, an IP attorney, an engineer, a research scientist, an inventor and a university administrator all rolled in one. He started his career in academia before embarking to successfully lead his own technology start-up. Ir. Dr. Tan has a number of patents to his name. He then returned to academia to further his career as a well published Professor in engineering and technology, both in Hong Kong and Australia. Ir. Dr. Tan is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of Engineers Australia. He is also a registered Australian Trade Marks attorney and an often referenced patent consultant. In his spare time, Ir. Dr. Tan has a keen interest in financial analysis and business modelling.
